Global Women Intact is also the proud producer of the San Francisco African Dance & Drum Festival. Since its inception in 2004, the festival has brought some of the best renowned national and international dancers and drummers to the Bay Area. The festival is a key cultural and educational experience in traditional African dance and drumming for California statewide.
Consisting of five wonderful days of traditional African dance,
drumming, and songs with master dancers and drummers from Senegal,
Liberia Mali, Guinea, and Gambia, the festival profiles different
styles of drumming and dancing of Sabar, Djem, and Congolese
styles of dance and drum as well.
The
full day schedule of events includes classes taught by professional
dancers and drummers from various parts of West, South and Central
Africa. The festival is open to anyone interested in the Arts,
student dancers, drummers, and persons who simply would like
to observe and learn to teach an unfamiliar dance or drum style.
All of the festival classes are designed and structured for
the novice, intermediate, and experienced dancers or drummers.
A
free class offered for junior dancers’ ages sixteen and younger
is often a main attraction; early registration is strongly encouraval
will open its’ doors at 9:00 a.m.
The public will have access to a range of local African arts
and craft and food vendors. The danceses will commence from
9:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.
Concert
Main Stage
The festival day activities will culminate with a main stage
concert. The concert is a premier eveature three professional
African dance companies.
